On believing in death

I had a friend once who was going to die.   I was younger then and much more ill mannered and I asked him one day what it felt like to know.   He stopped for a minute.   I apologized profusely for asking.

I will never forget his response.

“Larry we all know.   The difference between you and me is I believe it.   When it happens I will probably be really scared and cry more than a little.   I hope I don’t go with a lot of regrets.  Days are more important than ever.   I  know I try a lot harder to live dying.   I  wish I  believed a long time ago.   I want to go remembering what I did more than stacking up all my didn’t do’s. “
