WE HAVE AN EMERGENCY:Linda is in real danger

PLEASE READ THIS POST AND SHARE WITH OTHERS

My wife Linda is in danger.  Serious danger.

Linda has had epilepsy since birth.  Years ago a good day was 10-15 grand mal seizures.  She went through brain surgery and still the seizures remained.  Finally she found, after trying virtually every other medicine, one medication that helped– lamictal.  Now her seizures while still there are stable and have been for several years.

There is something called status epilepticus.  It basically means that you go into a neverending series of seizures until you die.  If you can get to the ER in time they can often stop the seizures.  Prior to lamictal Linda was in status 4 different times since we met.

Lamictal has saved her life.     It has given her a life.  But it is expensive: $2700 a month.

A couple of weeks ago Linda heard from Tenn Care (tennessee medicaid).  They will no longer pay for the lamictal.  I guess she costs too much.  Despite the severity of her epilepsy, despite the track record of success….despite everything they are saying no.  We have tried to appeal.  The doctor has tried.  Everything is no and we are running out of time.

Linda has a couple of days of medicine left.  I think the pharmacy will give her a few days of emergency.  But we have to at least buy some time.

If you are like me you are in a position where you cant financially help and that is fine.  Your prayers are just as important to us.  But if enough people see this perhaps there will be someone who can afford to help buy some time.  Please pass this on to others and ask them to pass it on.

Email or call the dept of tenn care.  Ask them why.  Ask them to reconsider.  Write the governor.  If you live in Tennessee ask your legislator to help.

Spread the word.  It is potentially life threatening for Linda.  Just stopping lamictal cold turkey can be fatal.

This is so very wrong.  Please if nothing else spread the word.

The clock is ticking for Linda.  I don’t know where else to turn or what else to do.

  1. Just a few suggestions to buy time:

Ask the company that makes Lamictal – Go to the CEO &/or Head of Public Affairs to ask for help in exchange for Linda’s testimonial about the drug for her.

I’ve heard that some companies will discount their product in emergency situations like Linda’s.

Please contact your state’s equivalent of Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program that we have in CA. It may also be called SHIPP. If Linda is disabled by her epilepsy, then Medicare can cover the expense. Check with an attorney who specializes in SSI & Medicare on federal law on protected status of medications for epilepsy.

I know that a quick solution is important, but Linda needs to cover this long term…

As an advocate for DBSA, I realize how important mental & neurological health parity is. Please contact Phyllis Foxworth @pfoxworth@dbsalliance.org for guidance in this area. Her work #: 312.988.1165 – Chicago headquarters for the Depression & Bipolar Support Alliance. Good to work with someone like Phyllis who knows how  to work with drug cos., marketing, public affairs from a business perspective.
